A neti pot, which looks like a genie's lamp, is commonly used to irrigate sinuses. The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals issued its warning following a second death this year caused by Naegleria fowleri, the so-called brain-eating amoeba.

A 51-year-old DeSoto Parish woman died after using tap water in a neti pot to irrigate her sinuses and became infected by the deadly amoeba, which entered the body through her nose. In June, a 20-year-old St. Bernard Parish man died under the same circumstances.

"If you are irrigating, flushing, or rinsing your sinuses, for example, by using a neti pot, use distilled, sterile or previously boiled water to make up the irrigation solution," said Louisiana State Epidemiologist, Dr. Raoult Ratard. "Tap water is safe for drinking, but not for irrigating your nose." It's also important to rinse the irrigation device after each use and leave open to air dry, he said.

The very rare infection typically occurs when people go swimming or diving in warm freshwater lakes and rivers. In very rare instances, health experts said such infections may also occur when contaminated water from other sources, such as inadequately chlorinated swimming pool water or heated tap water less than 116.6 degrees, enters the nose when people submerge their heads or when people irrigate their sinuses with devices such as a neti pot.

DHH said the amoeba causes the disease primary amebic meningoencephalitis, a brain infection that leads to the destruction of brain tissue. In its early stages, symptoms may be similar to symptoms of bacterial meningitis and can include headache, fever, nausea, vomiting and stiff neck. Later symptoms include confusion, loss of balance, seizures and hallucinations.

After the start of symptoms, the disease progresses rapidly and usually causes death within one to 12 days.

Why Do Some People Get Bad Breath

I am often asked why some people get bad breath and not others. This is an interesting question.

When we are born, our oral bacteria makeup is passed onto us from our parents. This often happens with the first touches or kisses. This was shown in a study at Queensland University on premature babies who did not get mouth bacteria until they had human contact after leaving their incubators.

These bacteria colonised at birth, are now our bacteria for life. we can modify them for the worse by taking antibiotics, disinfectant mouthwash and lifestyle habits. Or we can modify them for the better by cleaning away the excess bacteria made and pumping the mouth full of good probiotics such as K12 and M18. These KForce probiotics have mountains of research from Otago University as to their many health benefits.

Bad Breath is a bacterial problem in 95% of all cases. So if your parents gave you bacteria that like to break down proteins and bad breath smells, and then you feed these bacteria without cleaning the food sources and excess bacteria away twice a day, then you will get Bad Breath.

Your compatriot that is low in these bad breath bacteria, is more lucky. They do not need the strenuous oral hygiene measures that you do, as they are not making as many bad breath bacteria and gases.

But do not worry, low levels of cleaning in these "lucky" people will lead to other mouth complaints eventually such as gum disease and an increase in pathogenic illnesses. There is no substitute to a balanced bacterial mouth.

Bad Breath and Heart Disease

Results from our online Quiz reveal that over 80% of people have some form of gum disease and do not clean regularly!!!

Well now studies are showing that apart from this laziness causing bad breath, the bacteria you are allowing to grow in your gums can be more sinister.

A large study published in the British Medical Journal showed a 70 percent increase in risk of cardiovascular disease in people who neglect to brush twice a day (De Olivera C, 2010). People with inflammation in their gums and gum disease have been shown to have systemic inflammation and an increased risk of heart disease. People who get treatments for their gums, get a reduction in the systemic inflammation. The same bugs found in the inflamed gums are found in plaques that plug up the coronary arteries of the heart causing heart attack.

It is now widely accepted that bacteria from your mouth can travel into your blood stream, and cause a multitude of issues. Do you need more motivation to brush and floss.

Can Probiotics Stop Bad breath

Probiotics are sweeping the Internet, and are being touted as the cure all to almost every illness. In particular, Probiotics are being promoted as the best cure for Bad Breath (Halitosis). In my opinion, Probiotics only work well when used with a cleaning system. So please be very wary about the claims for a magic pill.

If the mouth and throat are first cleaned thoroughly of bacteria and then a probiotic such as BLIS K12 is used as the last step of this cleaning regime, the probiotic is able to make a temporary residence on the tongue surface, and help control the volume of other bad breath bacteria. The cleaning needs to be right back to the "gag" reflex as this is where most of the bad breath bacteria live. Testing at our Australian Breath Clinic found only non-foaming gels were able to clean to this area (KForce Tongue Gel).

In other words, Probiotics such as BLIS K12 work extremely well for bad breath when used strictly as directed. I really want to stress, that Probiotics on their own without this cleaning program will not stop Halitosis. They will however help to increase your general immunity against Strep sore throat.

BLIS K12 is backed by volumes of science from universities around the world. It is the most effective Probiotic at improving Oral Health and preventing mouth diseases. In fact this was its main purpose when developed back in 2000. At our Australian Breath Clinic we have shown that if you focus on a mouth and throat cleaning program every 12 hours to keep levels of the wrong bacteria minimal, then BLIS K12 can increase your Oral Health, and reduce the wrong bacteria in your mouth.

You will see that all our KForce Kits focus on cleaning the mouth and throat first. In fact the KForce Starter Kit and KForce Plus Kit (which are giving extremely high success rates) focus on complete cleaning for the first five days, and only then are the options of Probiotics offered.

I am happy to hear your feedback, and answer any questions. But please do not just take a Probiotic Pill and expect a miracle.

Bad Breath Bacteria

I am often asked if you can kill the bad breath bacteria. The simple answer is NO. Most bacteria that cause bad breath or halitosis already live in the mouth and are quite harmless. It is just they break down proteins and the waste product they give off are Volatile Sulphur Gases or bad breath as we smell it.

Bacterial balance changes every day in our mouths, it is a dynamic thing. Such things as alcohol consumption, acid consumption, foods, cleaning of our mouth protocol, stress, dieting, illness and medication (just to name some off the top of my head) will influence bacterial balance.

So you can see this is impossible to stay on top of all the time. The one consistent thing these bacteria do, is that they will not make smells until they have formed into colonies. This roughly takes them twelve hours. So the secret to controlling or eradicating bad breath is two fold.

1. MOUTH CLEANING. This is not toothbrushing. But rather a protocol for cleaning the bacteria from the mouth and throat every twelve hours so that they do not have time to form into colonies and start making bad breath smells. This is the protocol I developed at our Australian Breath Clinic, and it is accessible with our KFORCE PLUS KIT

2. PROBIOTICS. Once the mouth is clean, it is the optimum time to place defensive probiotics in the mouth. These Bad Breath Protective bugs can change the dynamics of how the bad breath bacteria can live in the mouth.

These two things need to be done every day as part of living. Bad breath or Halitosis usually gets worse as you get older. So simply swigging some mouthwash or brushing your teeth will not suffice to eradicate bad breath in the future.

Bad Breath and Daily Probiotics

Everyone has tried to remedy their bad breath with commercial toothpastes and mouthwash, and most find that it is just a quick fix but really does not get deep down to the root of the problem. Why?

Well simply put, once bacteria have been in the mouth for more than 12 hours they can form into colonies called biofilms. Once in a biofilm, the bacteria are able to protect each other against disinfectants and antibiotics. That is why such bacterial disease like gum disease are so difficult to clear up with just medicine.

One method that we have found works amazingly well at our clinic in Sydney, is to use non foaming cleaning pastes and mouthwash to access and clean away all of the biofilm, and thus the bacteria as well. But this is a difficult and tedious job which needs to be performed twice a day for ongoing success.

So if bacteria can protect other bacteria, then why can't we use bacteria to destroy other bacteria. This is the definition of a probiotic. This is a good bacteria that you deliberately place in the mouth to work against the bad breath bugs.

Now, we know they work, but they need help to colonise a mouth full of bad breath bugs. So using probiotics as well as a good cleaning protocol leads to fresh breath in almost 100% of cases. We are testing and developing more types of probiotics every month, and have some amazing ones coming up in 2011. So stay tuned for more.

Probiotics for Oral Health

In this day and age of over use of antibiotics it is comforting to know that the science of Probiotics will be the next hero medicine. Probiotics are good bacteria that can be placed into the mouth through powder mouthwash or lozenges. Simply taking them every day, allows the Probiotics to be extremely effective against a wide range of bacteria that can cause bad breath, gum disease and tooth decay.

Not only will these Probiotics stop most mouth issues they also have the added benefit of gently whitening your teeth. This is because they by product from the Probiotics is a small amount of Hydrogen Peroxide, the same ingredient used in dental bleaching systems.

So taking a simple dose of Probiotic every day when you take your vitamins can lead to a much improved and healthy life. Try it and let me know what you think.

Morning Breath on New Years Day

Who woke up on New Years Day and thought a small animal had crawled inside their mouth and died. Yes the dreaded morning breath. And the first day of the year is the perfect time to get it. Why?

Well most of us had very little sleep the night before which upsets our body clock. Then add on top of this the alcohol that fuelled the night before causing major dryness of the mouth, and finally throw in not cleaning your mouth before you collapsed into bed for a few hours of shut eye. This is the perfect mix to get morning breath.

OK, so you know what you have to do to stop morning breath on other days. It is actually quite easy. In fact just ensure you clean your tongue with a tongue gel and tongue cleaner. Maybe flush your throat with some saline, and reduce your alcohol intake during the night.

We have put together a Morning Breath Treatment as well, to take the thought out of what to use. So you can try that and give us some feedback. But I would love to hear any New Years Day stories.

Sore throat may cause bad breath

As you know I treat bad breath patients every day. I am able to get individual readings of all the different bad breath gases. The most difficult gas to treat is Dimethyl Sulphide. This gas comes from proteins caught at the back of the throat or on the gag reflex line of the tongue.

This means in times of an acute sore throat, there would be an extreme increase in the activity of these bacteria. I am starting however to see a trend where people report a sore throat occurring as the start of their bad breath problems.

This means that some bacteria that may cause issues are able to remain at the throat/tongue interface and make a new home. Generally the patient can smell the Dimethyl Sulphide all day, but the actual amounts of gas are so small that there is not enough escaping for the public to smell. So people around the sufferer tell them they so not have bad breath.

These patients are called Halitophobics. And up until we used our Halicheck Gas Chromogrpah they were unable to be diagnosed and properly treated. But now I am able to clearly identify these people and treat them. Please call me for more information about how we do this.

Also please post your stories if you feel this is the type of bad breath you suffer from. I would love to add your data to our evolving science.

Shocking Bad Breath Results

Hello Everyone
Well "Dob in Bad Breath Week" is over again for another year. It was an exciting and hectic week. I did about 20 radio interviews all over Australia. We had amazing interest from Western Australia, and South Australia. You can click the link to listen to an interview I did on Radio ABC. CLICK HERE

Apart from the radio interviews we were published in the COURIER MAIL Newspaper, PERTH NOW Newspaper, ADELAIDE NOW Newspaper, and ONLY MELBOURNE Newspaper.

We also did an online quiz for people to check "How Kissable your Are". Unfortunately the results were quite alarming.
1. 80% of Australians do not floss their teeth (shocking)
2. 65% of Australians have signs and symptoms of gum disease (even more shocking)
3. 60% of Australians used a tongue cleaner (thankfully)
4. 80% of Australians thought they had Bad Breath or Morning Breath

These results really shocked me. We have such a simple and reliable treatment to stop bad breath and prevent it from returning. I hope that these sufferers find the time to read our website and maybe contact us for some personal advice. If you wish to talk to me my toll free Australia wide number is 1300-653-335

Till next time.

Dob in Bad Breath Week

Could your bad breath actually get you the sack from work? We have joined forces with a leading law firm to highlight that Aussies could be at risk of losing their jobs if they leave a chronic breath condition untreated. Why? Do they honestly believe that know one knew they had a halitosis problem, and all of a sudden it is gone? Why are people so embarrassed to bring the topic of bad breath treatment into the public arena. All your friends knew you had a problem and are probably curious as to how you got rid of it. Wouldn't you agree?

It goes further than this. did you know that 99% of all the patients I see for Halitosis have their own dentist. They have just recently been to see the dentist, yet did not discuss the bad breath issue with them. Why? Again they are just too embarrassed. But isn't the dentist there to fix such problems? Human nature is funny.

People have to realise, that when they have bad breath, everyone suffers. The patient has the everyday embarrassment, their friends have to politely put up with the smell and so on. Yet all I hear are people I cure saying "Why didn't I know about your treatment?"

We need help to get our message out to everyone. I mean everyone, because you either suffer now from bad breath, or as you get older you are a candidate to get chronic bad breath. If we can teach the public how to keep a healthy mouth balance, then this will go an amazingly long way towards bad breath prevention. So help us to help you. Spread the word to friends and family. Dob In Bad Breath Week is fast approaching. Will you participate?

Comment on our website and Facebook page. Look forward as always to hear your comments.
Dr Geoffrey Speiser
CEO Australian Breath Clinic

New Websites - Appreciate Your Feedback

WOW..... End of another week. I just finished 4 intensive days of re writing the websites "www.breezecare.com.au" and "www.australianbreathclinic.com.au" I would love to hear your feedback, if we are meeting your expectations. You can vote just above the blog and let me know.

I had an interesting patient this week. She blew quite high on the HALICHECK Breath machine, with her highest reading being a feacal smell which usually indicates gum disease. But her gums were actually not too bad. definitely not bad enough to be giving the readings she was giving. So I did some further tests on her and low and behold her saliva was extremely acidic. The patient told me that she constantly has a bad taste in her mouth. This would be correct because acid saliva always causes a bad taste.

Anyway, I decided to get a full medical done on her as her breath readings and clinical examination were not adding up. Well guess what, she has uncontrolled diabetes. So that is what was causing her acidic saliva, taste issue etc.

But I wanted to turn her saliva neutral or alkaline quickly as, acidic saliva eats teeth in a matter of months. So I put her on the KForce Balance Rinse, and she is now better within days. So now the doctors can work out her diabetes, and she will continue to use our KFORCE PLUS KIT to maintain her saliva and keep her bad breath gases at bay.

Looking forward to getting the website feedback
Dr Speiser (CEO Australian Breath Clinic)

Busy Week on Radio

Hello (first Post for October 2010)
I did a lot of Radio interviews last week. Of course they were all on Bad Breath. I spoke to Johnny Young from the old television show Young Talent Time, at Perth Radio 6IX. He was an extremely pleasant guy. Also spoke to Tony Wright from 2EL, and Amanda Blair from 5AA Adelaide and Meech from ABC Mackay.

We also were written about in MX Magazine. This is a mag given out on the trains in Sydney. They wanted to know about kissing and saliva. What bacteria can you catch when you kiss someone? Again a very interesting topic.

The general questions were how can Bad breath be so bad as to ruin relationships. This constantly seems a difficult message to get out to the public. But from the patients I see and the Web people I speak to I know a lot of people deal with this embarrassing ailment every day of their lives.

It would be great if some of you would post anonymously on our website so that others know they are not alone.
Looking forward to hearing from all of you
Dr. Speiser (CEO Australian Breath Clinic)

Aussie Woman Blames Bad Breath On The End Of Her Marriage

Australian Breath Clinic says don't let bad breath spell the death of your relationships Although most couples will say they can deal with their partner's quirks and idiosyncrasies, according to the Australian Breath Clinic, severe bad breath - left untreated - is fast becoming the new relationship killer. In fact, the Clinic says chronic bad breath - or halitosis - has lead to the breakdown of countless relationships, both personal and professional, and in one unlucky case has lead to a husband separating from his wife because of her chronic breath condition.

"We recently treated 'Mrs X' - 50 year old woman who was so concerned about her breath that it was affecting both her physical and emotional relationship with her husband," said Dr Speiser, Director of the Australian Breath Clinic.

"After visiting our clinic and taking an oral breath reading, it was clear Mrs X did have a case of halitosis and, although we quickly treated this, the constant worrying about her condition had clearly taken a toll on her and her husband. After subsequent visits, it became clear the marriage was on the rocks and her husband was seeing another woman - this poor woman was devastated and blamed her breath for the relationship breakdown."

According to the Australian Breath Clinic, relationships going sour due to a person's breath are fast becoming more common and frequent.

"Amongst the many patients we see each week, almost 70 per cent are due to problems within the relationship because of the patient's breath and we're seeing this figure increase quite rapidly. Most of the time it's the person suffering from bad breath rather than their partner who has the issue. For people living with bad breath, it can be difficult for them to be intimate or even physically close to another person because they're so worried about their breath being a turn-off."

But for one in three Aussies who suffers from bad breath, hope is at hand. And in the case of Mrs X, her breath diagnosis and treatment at the Clinic lead to a complete turnaround in her life.

"Although Mrs X originally came to us to treat her bad breath with the intention of saving her marriage, once she had overcome her emotional hang-ups about her breath she was a new person. On her last visit to the Clinic, Mrs X had turned over a new leaf, not only was she no longer worried about interacting socially because of her breath, she also realised she was better off without her husband."

"If you're unsure about your breath, don't delay in getting a professional opinion," said Dr Speiser. "Although most people would prefer to convince themselves that their breath will 'sort itself out', it might save your relationship - or even improve your chances of meeting someone - if you seek out professional help."

COULD HUMANS HAVE A UNIQUE BREATH ‘FINGERPRINT’?

COULD HUMANS HAVE A UNIQUE BREATH ‘FINGERPRINT’?

Does your breath leave the right impression about you?

Could each person’s breath be as unique as their fingerprint? Do we each have an exclusive breath ‘pattern’ that could be used to identify us in room full of strangers? The case of the ‘bad breath’ bandit – a bank robber terrorising the city of Detroit who was identified by his fragrant breath – has lead experts including Dr Geoff Speiser of the Australian Breath Clinic to suggest that, unknowingly, each person’s breath could leave a distinct impression on those around them.

“There are over 50 different mouth gases that current technology can detect. However, through research at the Australian Breath Clinic, we’ve determined that only three of these make up the bad breath fingerprint. Incidentally these specific gases also have their own unique odour,” said Dr Speiser.

According to Dr Speiser, human breath is made up of volatile gases which can be measured, analysed and ‘read’ just like a fingerprint sample. Harnessing gas diagnostic technology, which can detect and cross references these gases in minute volumes, the same technology being used to detect the presence of cancer in people, Dr Speiser provides breath analyses for people concerned about the freshness of their breath. The ‘Halicheck’ samples over 50 individual mouth gases to determine the cause of bad breath odour in each individual. After the diagnosis, a breath freshening program is tailored to each person’s unique needs with a strong focus on achieving mouth ‘bacterial balance’ to deliver fresh breath.

However, according Dr Speiser, in recent times, more and more people have been seeking his advice specifically about the impact their breath will have in face to face situations.

“Although the Australian Breath Clinic has focussed on helping to diagnosis and treat people who suffer from bad breath, we’ve seen a huge surge of interest, following the global economic crisis, amongst busy professionals who want to make sure their breath is leaving the right impression on their colleagues and peers.”

“Unsurprisingly we found that the largest group of professionals interested in our services were executives. Working under time pressures and demanding situations that required their full attention, most needed to full confident that their breath wasn’t letting them down.”

Dr Speiser credits the rise in Clinic consultations both to the pervasive stigma still associated with bad breath as well as the Clinic’s new technologies which have made detecting and treating bad breath faster, quicker and more accurate. The Clinic claims to help people banish their bad breath in as little as 5 days through their unique bacterial balance program.

“Bad breath continues to be a taboo subject and most people realise they can’t rely on friends, colleagues or even their partners to let them know! Rather than running the risk their breath is leaving the wrong impression, many professionals visit us for a check-up as well as to maintain their breath’s freshness. In fact many seemingly ‘healthy’ people can suffer from bad breath simply by having their mouth bacteria thrown out of balance by lifestyle factors, certain medications, and even just having a dry mouth.”

To attend the Clinic for a breath consultation, to interview Dr Speiser, or for further information, please contact Sharon at sharon@breezecare.com

Dr Speiser and the Amazing BreathGuard Gel

Come and watch a day in the life of a Bad Breath Dentist. Your local doctor must determine this. Please call our clinic once Medicare has approved your status and we can make the necessary appointments.

If you belong to a private health fund and have dental cover, then a full breath and dental examination will leave you about $150 out of pocket. This is because the health funds do not cover the Halicheck or Saliva testing part of our program. However the actual examination, all xrays, clean and fluoride are all claimable.

Dr. Speiser is a member of MBF MemberCare. So all rebates are set at their rebate levels. Patients who belong to MBF Health Fund are entitled to a higher rebate when they are treated by MemberCare dentists.

Alternatively, you may want to start just with one of our Treatment Kits. You have the choice of Balance Menthol or BreathGuard Mild Mint. Both kits are equally effective, so you can feel confident with either kit.

We have more exciting news to release in a few weeks. So please keep checking back to our website often. Remember, you can always call us to discuss any individual needs.
Dr. Geoffrey Speiser

Online Phone Consultations Now Available in UK

As a world first, Dr Speiser has developed a series of questions that can be used for an online phone consultation. The questions will enable a trained consultant to determine if the bad breath is a health issue, cleaning issue or lifestyle issue. From the answers given the consultant can make recommendations as to the best course of treatment.

Some patients may still wish to have a physical Halicheck Gas Chromograph reading. This is possible by visiting one of our clinics in Australia, United Kingdom or Malaysia.

At the time of the phone consultation the consultant will be able to advise of any promotions that the Breath Clinics may be running. One by the Buffalo School of Dental Medicine probed 21 people with chronic bad breath and 36 without and found S. moorei "in every patient that had halitosis".

A previous study of eight subjects with halitosis and five without showed S. moorei was "always found in patients with halitosis and never in patients who did not have this problem".

The biologists presented their findings to Saturday's annual meeting of the American Association for Dental Research in Dallas."

Here is probably another explanation of why KForceK12 Probiotic Treatment is so successful. KForceK12 is a bacteria that lives on the tongue surface and is able to defend its territory against invading bad breath bacteria such as S.moorei.

The other interesting point shown in the studies is that bad breath bacteria live in tongue coatings. KForceK12 is designed to remove coatings twice a day. So KForceK12 not only remove coatings bacteria feed on, but also fight against the actual bad breath bacteria. This is exciting news, more to follow!!

New Website for Australian Breath Clinic

We are just completing a trial of our new product discovery. We are the only private clinic in Australia to own one of these machines, and there are less then 500 worldwide. Oral Chroma is able to give you a scientific readout of the three main gases of bad breath (hydrogen sulphide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulphide) and make suggestions as to the likely site of the bacteria making these Volatile Sulphur Compounds. Testing is non invasive and takes just 8minutes. If you would like a Free Breath Analysis with the Oral Chroma please call us on 1300-653-335 (toll free) to organise a time to stop by and have a reading. This machine is only available at our Australian Breath Clinic in Edgecliff Sydney, and not with any of our affiliates.

I look forward to answering any questions you may have.

Dr Geoffrey Speiser (BDS Syd.Uni)
