Netti Pot For Sinus Irrigation- Can Kill Beware!!

Health regulators warned residents about the dangers of using neti pots improperly. A neti pot, which looks like a genie's lamp, is commonly used to irrigate sinuses. The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals issued its warning following a second death this year caused by Naegleria fowleri, the so-called brain-eating amoeba.

A 51-year-old DeSoto Parish woman died after using tap water in a neti pot to irrigate her sinuses and became infected by the deadly amoeba, which entered the body through her nose. In June, a 20-year-old St. Bernard Parish man died under the same circumstances.

"If you are irrigating, flushing, or rinsing your sinuses, for example, by using a neti pot, use distilled, sterile or previously boiled water to make up the irrigation solution," said Louisiana State Epidemiologist, Dr. Raoult Ratard. "Tap water is safe for drinking, but not for irrigating your nose." It's also important to rinse the irrigation device after each use and leave open to air dry, he said.

The very rare infection typically occurs when people go swimming or diving in warm freshwater lakes and rivers. In very rare instances, health experts said such infections may also occur when contaminated water from other sources, such as inadequately chlorinated swimming pool water or heated tap water less than 116.6 degrees, enters the nose when people submerge their heads or when people irrigate their sinuses with devices such as a neti pot.

DHH said the amoeba causes the disease primary amebic meningoencephalitis, a brain infection that leads to the destruction of brain tissue. In its early stages, symptoms may be similar to symptoms of bacterial meningitis and can include headache, fever, nausea, vomiting and stiff neck. Later symptoms include confusion, loss of balance, seizures and hallucinations.

After the start of symptoms, the disease progresses rapidly and usually causes death within one to 12 days.

Why Do Some People Get Bad Breath

I am often asked why some people get bad breath and not others. This is an interesting question.

When we are born, our oral bacteria makeup is passed onto us from our parents. This often happens with the first touches or kisses. This was shown in a study at Queensland University on premature babies who did not get mouth bacteria until they had human contact after leaving their incubators.

These bacteria colonised at birth, are now our bacteria for life. we can modify them for the worse by taking antibiotics, disinfectant mouthwash and lifestyle habits. Or we can modify them for the better by cleaning away the excess bacteria made and pumping the mouth full of good probiotics such as K12 and M18. These KForce probiotics have mountains of research from Otago University as to their many health benefits.

Bad Breath is a bacterial problem in 95% of all cases. So if your parents gave you bacteria that like to break down proteins and bad breath smells, and then you feed these bacteria without cleaning the food sources and excess bacteria away twice a day, then you will get Bad Breath.

A large study published in the British Medical Journal showed a 70 percent increase in risk of cardiovascular disease in people who neglect to brush twice a day (De Olivera C, 2010). People with inflammation in their gums and gum disease have been shown to have systemic inflammation and an increased risk of heart disease. People who get treatments for their gums, get a reduction in the systemic inflammation. The same bugs found in the inflamed gums are found in plaques that plug up the coronary arteries of the heart causing heart attack.

It is now widely accepted that bacteria from your mouth can travel into your blood stream, and cause a multitude of issues. Do you need more motivation to brush and floss.

Can Probiotics Stop Bad breath

Probiotics are sweeping the Internet, and are being touted as the cure all to almost every illness. In particular, Probiotics are being promoted as the best cure for Bad Breath (Halitosis). In my opinion, Probiotics only work well when used with a cleaning system. So please be very wary about the claims for a magic pill.

If the mouth and throat are first cleaned thoroughly of bacteria and then a probiotic such as BLIS K12 is used as the last step of this cleaning regime, the probiotic is able to make a temporary residence on the tongue surface, and help control the volume of other bad breath bacteria. Bad Breath Bacteria

I am often asked if you can kill the bad breath bacteria. The simple answer is NO. Most bacteria that cause bad breath or halitosis already live in the mouth and are quite harmless. It is just they break down proteins and the waste product they give off are Volatile Sulphur Gases or bad breath as we smell it.

Bacterial balance changes every day in our mouths, it is a dynamic thing. Such things as alcohol consumption, acid consumption, foods, cleaning of our mouth protocol, stress, dieting, illness and medication (just to name some off the top of my head) will influence bacterial balance.

So you can see this is impossible to stay on top of all the time. The one consistent thing these bacteria do, is that they will not make smells until they have formed into colonies. This roughly takes them twelve hours. So the secret to controlling or eradicating bad breath is two fold.

1. MOUTH CLEANING. This is not toothbrushing. But rather a protocol for cleaning the bacteria from the mouth and throat every twelve hours so that they do not have time to form into colonies and start making bad breath smells. Morning Breath on New Years Day

Who woke up on New Years Day and thought a small animal had crawled inside their mouth and died. Yes the dreaded morning breath. And the first day of the year is the perfect time to get it. Why?

Well most of us had very little sleep the night before which upsets our body clock. Then add on top of this the alcohol that fuelled the night before causing major dryness of the mouth, and finally throw in not cleaning your mouth before you collapsed into bed for a few hours of shut eye. This is the perfect mix to get morning breath.

OK, so you know what you have to do to stop morning breath on other days. It is actually quite easy. In fact just ensure you clean your tongue with a tongue gel and tongue cleaner. Maybe flush your throat with some saline, and reduce your alcohol intake during the night.

Sore throat may cause bad breath

As you know I treat bad breath patients every day. I am able to get individual readings of all the different bad breath gases. The most difficult gas to treat is Dimethyl Sulphide. This gas comes from proteins caught at the back of the throat or on the gag reflex line of the tongue.

This means in times of an acute sore throat, there would be an extreme increase in the activity of these bacteria. I am starting however to see a trend where people report a sore throat occurring as the start of their bad breath problems.

This means that some bacteria that may cause issues are able to remain at the throat/tongue interface and make a new home. Generally the patient can smell the Dimethyl Sulphide all day, but the actual amounts of gas are so small that there is not enough escaping for the public to smell. So people around the sufferer tell them they so not have bad breath.

These patients are called Halitophobics. And up until we used our Halicheck Gas Chromogrpah they were unable to be diagnosed and properly treated. But now I am able to clearly identify these people and treat them. Please call me for more information about how we do this.

Everyone knows you Have Bad Breath

Hello Everyone,
What always amazes me is that when I see a patient at our Sydney Clinic and cure them of their Bad Breath they are too embarrassed to go forth and let other sufferers know there is a simple remedy. Why? Do they honestly believe that know one knew they had a halitosis problem, and all of a sudden it is gone? Why are people so embarrassed to bring the topic of bad breath treatment into the public arena. All your friends knew you had a problem and are probably curious as to how you got rid of it. Wouldn't you agree?

It goes further than this. did you know that 99% of all the patients I see for Halitosis have their own dentist. They have just recently been to see the dentist, yet did not discuss the bad breath issue with them. Why? Again they are just too embarrassed. But isn't the dentist there to fix such problems? Human nature is funny.

People have to realise, that when they have bad breath, everyone suffers. The patient has the everyday embarrassment, their friends have to politely put up with the smell and so on. Yet all I hear are people I cure saying "Why didn't I know about your treatment?"

We need help to get our message out to everyone. I mean everyone, because you either suffer now from bad breath, or as you get older you are a candidate to get chronic bad breath. New Websites - Appreciate Your Feedback

WOW..... End of another week. I just finished 4 intensive days of re writing the websites "www.breezecare.com.au" and "www.australianbreathclinic.com.au" I would love to hear your feedback, if we are meeting your expectations. You can vote just above the blog and let me know.

I had an interesting patient this week. She blew quite high on the HALICHECK Breath machine, with her highest reading being a feacal smell which usually indicates gum disease. But her gums were actually not too bad. definitely not bad enough to be giving the readings she was giving. So I did some further tests on her and low and behold her saliva was extremely acidic. The patient told me that she constantly has a bad taste in her mouth. This would be correct because acid saliva always causes a bad taste.

Anyway, I decided to get a full medical done on her as her breath readings and clinical examination were not adding up. Well guess what, she has uncontrolled diabetes. So that is what was causing her acidic saliva, taste issue etc.

But I wanted to turn her saliva neutral or alkaline quickly as, acidic saliva eats teeth in a matter of months. So I put her on the KForce Balance Rinse, and she is now better within days. Busy Week on Radio

Hello (first Post for October 2010)
I did a lot of Radio interviews last week. Of course they were all on Bad Breath. I spoke to Johnny Young from the old television show Young Talent Time, at Perth Radio 6IX. He was an extremely pleasant guy. Also spoke to Tony Wright from 2EL, and Amanda Blair from 5AA Adelaide and Meech from ABC Mackay.

We also were written about in MX Magazine. This is a mag given out on the trains in Sydney. They wanted to know about kissing and saliva. What bacteria can you catch when you kiss someone? Again a very interesting topic.

The general questions were how can Bad breath be so bad as to ruin relationships. This constantly seems a difficult message to get out to the public. But from the patients I see and the Web people I speak to I know a lot of people deal with this embarrassing ailment every day of their lives.

Aussie Woman Blames Bad Breath On The End Of Her Marriage

Australian Breath Clinic says don't let bad breath spell the death of your relationships Although most couples will say they can deal with their partner's quirks and idiosyncrasies, according to the Australian Breath Clinic, severe bad breath - left untreated - is fast becoming the new relationship killer. In fact, the Clinic says chronic bad breath - or halitosis - has lead to the breakdown of countless relationships, both personal and professional, and in one unlucky case has lead to a husband separating from his wife because of her chronic breath condition.

"We recently treated 'Mrs X' - 50 year old woman who was so concerned about her breath that it was affecting both her physical and emotional relationship with her husband," said Dr Speiser, Director of the Australian Breath Clinic.

"After visiting our clinic and taking an oral breath reading, it was clear Mrs X did have a case of halitosis and, although we quickly treated this, the constant worrying about her condition had clearly taken a toll on her and her husband. After subsequent visits, it became clear the marriage was on the rocks and her husband was seeing another woman - this poor woman was devastated and blamed her breath for the relationship breakdown."

According to the Australian Breath Clinic, relationships going sour due to a person's breath are fast becoming more common and frequent.

"Amongst the many patients we see each week, almost 70 per cent are due to problems within the relationship because of the patient's breath and we're seeing this figure increase quite rapidly. Most of the time it's the person suffering from bad breath rather than their partner who has the issue. For people living with bad breath, it can be difficult for them to be intimate or even physically close to another person because they're so worried about their breath being a turn-off."

COULD HUMANS HAVE A UNIQUE BREATH ‘FINGERPRINT’?

I have set out below some information for patients that may want to visit our Sydney Clinic.

If your doctor has determined that bad breath is part of a chronic medical problem, then Medicare may cover the full breath and dental examination including all xrays and clean and fluoride. Your local doctor must determine this. Please call our clinic once Medicare has approved your status and we can make the necessary appointments.

If you belong to a private health fund and have dental cover, then a full breath and dental examination will leave you about $150 out of pocket. This is because the health funds do not cover the Halicheck or Saliva testing part of our program. However the actual examination, all xrays, clean and fluoride are all claimable.

Bad Breath Bug Discovered

"Biologists say they've identified the bacteria responsible for most cases of bad breath - Solobacterium moorei, which uses the tongue as a base on which to brew its malodorous compounds.

Two studies helped researchers confirm the findings, Reuters reports. One by the Buffalo School of Dental Medicine probed 21 people with chronic bad breath and 36 without and found S. moorei "in every patient that had halitosis".

A previous study of eight subjects with halitosis and five without showed S. moorei was "always found in patients with halitosis and never in patients who did not have this problem".

The biologists presented their findings to Saturday's annual meeting of the American Association for Dental Research in Dallas."

Today Tonight visits Australian Breath Clinic

The current affairs show "Today Tonight" visited Australian Breath Clinic last week to see exactly how our Oral Chromatography machine works. Interviewer Paul Makin was amazed at the technology, as well as how the clinic operated.
